Is a horn for a baby essential? Perhaps a better swaddle or sleeping bag?
Every newborn, no matter what time of year it is born, needs warmth and a tight wrap to feel similar to how it felt in mom's belly. To give newborns a substitute for the safe and familiar "tightness" of the last 9 months in mom's belly, they are wrapped in a horn, a wrap, a blanket or a larger diaper, creating a kind of cocoon. Such a method gradually adapts to the new reality, calms and reduces the occurrence of the Moro reflex*, which often wakes up toddlers.
In addition to cones, wrappers and diapers, you can buy baby sleeping bags, which have thick "shoulder straps" fastened with napkins. In the sleeping bag the arms are uncovered and the legs are hidden. In connection with the fact that:
- the newborn likes to be tightly wrapped,
- Moro reflexes are reduced,
- pediatricians recommend placing a newborn on its side
Sleeping bag will prove useful when the baby will be about 2 months old, then the child grows out of the cone or wrap and begins to dig himself out during sleep. At this stage of the baby's life a sleeping bag that will not allow him to dig himself out and will not be a danger for him (suffocation by pulling or complete uncovering as can happen with a blanket or bedding) will prove useful. In addition, EKO sleeping bags have a zipper sewn into the legs making it easier to change the diaper without completely removing the baby.

What to choose at the beginning: a horn or a sleeping bag?
The horn is square-shaped, is insulated with anti-allergenic fleece and looks like such a small quilt, and often has a pocket for a coconut insert, which stiffens the horn and makes it easier to hold the newborn. Usually a cone is required as a layette for the hospital.
Cones
A hosiery is shaped like a cocoon and has no insulation.

What kind of cone to choose?
A horn made of pleasant to the touch, certified and durable materials. The horn is the first and closest companion of the baby. Therefore, it should be made of materials pleasant to the baby's skin. The materials used in production, especially the filling, should meet the standards of products approved for children. The horn will also be washed quite often, so the materials used for its sewing should be adequately durable.
Size?
The newborn grows very quickly. The horn should serve you for at least about two months of the baby's life. After this period, babies begin to move their legs more often and thus dig out of the cone.
With or without a coconut insert?
You can find cones with a coconut insert and soft ones without a coconut insert. The insert is placed in a pocket on the back of the cone, which fastens with Velcro, for washing it should be removed. The purpose of the coconut insert is to make it easier for young parents to hold the baby properly. If the baby loves to be wrapped, a better solution is a cone without the coconut insert, but since the insert is removable you may be tempted to get this particular cone and see which version works better.
Fastened with Velcro.
We advise against buying cones fastened with Velcro, which do not allow you to adjust the way of wrapping to the individual needs of the baby. A Velcro-fastened cone works best. The cone fastens quickly, the baby does not unravel. In addition, some EKO cones have, in addition to Velcro, a bow, which is used for additional tying of the cone, as well as improving the appearance of the cone.
